Step 3: Current Towns Near Volcanoes

Earlier, you gathered a list of towns near your volcano and also near volcanoes similar to yours. When examiners plan new cities, they always look at similar cities in similar locations in order to get a sense of how a city in the same general situation should, or, in some cases, should not, be be built.

Guiding ideas:

  • What type of materials are the town's building made of?

  • How close are the towns to the volcano itself?

  • What is the population of the towns?

  • How old are the towns?

  • How are the buildings built in these towns?

  • Are there any cities that were constructed near the volcano that were destroyed during an eruption?

  • What are the cities' main resources/means for economic production?
